Why You May Need A Controller

Controllers are used to upgrade kilns that do not already have automatic controls such as KilnSitter kilns and kilns that are controlled by switches only. There are many benefits to using a controller which is why over 95% of the units Skutt sells include them.

  • More Precise Control.
  • Controlled Cooling
  • Hold at Temperature
  • Write Your Own Custom Programs
  • More Convenient
  • …and so much more.
If you are looking to add a controller to an older kiln there are a few things you need to consider:

Is the kiln in good shape? – A wall mount controller can be expensive. Often times people will consider adding one to a kiln that’s useful remaining life may only be a few years. If the kiln is due for new elements and the brick is pretty beat up you may want to consider just biting the bullet and getting a new kiln with the controller already installed. In the long run you most likely will come out ahead.

What is the amperage draw and voltage of your kiln? -You never want to plug a kiln into a wall mounted controller that exceeds it’s electrical rating. We make 120 volt Controllers that will handle kilns 15 amps and under and we make 208/240 volt controllers that will handle kilns that draw less than 50 amps.

What type of touch pad do you want? – We make 3 button controllers and we make what we call full sized controllers. Full size controllers have a complete number pad so you do not have In both sizes you have the choice of choosing a KilnMaster (ceramic kiln) or GlassMaster (glass kiln).

50 Amp Wall Mount Controllers

The KM1 Wall Mount Controller can upgrade just about any KilnSitter controlled kiln under 50Amps (40Amps 3Phase) with a NEMA 6-50 or NEMA 15-50 plug to perform just like an automatic kiln.Just plug your kiln into the back of the controller, plug the controller into the wall outlet and install the thermocouple.

When you are ready to fire you turn all of your switches to high, place a cone in the KilnSitter that is 1 cone higher than your target temperature, set your timer and press in the plunger. The KM1 will then cycle the power to the kiln on and off to run your desired program. It has all of the advantages of normal automatic kiln with the added benefit of a KilnSitter backup.

Unfortunately Zone Control, KilnLink, and Current Sensing are not available with this setup. Below is a list of models that will work with the KM1 controller.
